Everyone is born with a gift, mine is this: designing.

Growing up in Aruba, an island in the Caribbean, I was always involved in art projects. I loved to draw and create sketches which were unique. My artwork always made an impression at the few art competitions in which I participated, which lead me to receive awards for my creativity.

In college, I continued with exploring my creative side and graduated with a degree in graphic design. I then worked as a graphic designer and eventually, started my own graphic design business.

During this time my mother-in-law and I would sew and make quilts together. This is how I got into quilting.
My journey to become a pattern designer was inspired by an idea to design a baby quilt for my mother-in-law for an upcoming baby shower. As I was sketching out this first pattern, I got the feeling that maybe this is what I was supposed to be doing.

To explore the world of a pattern designer, I called a dear friend of mine who had started her own pattern design business. After a detailed conversation, her words of wisdom were: “Like with anything else, as long as you do what you love, the rest will follow”.

When I completed my design and showed it to my mother-in-law, she immediately said “Wow, this looks so cute! You need to be doing this!” I told her that the thought of designing patterns had crossed my mind. She then said: “Do what you love and the rest will follow...”.

That same day I went grocery shopping and while waiting in line in the little checkout aisle with all the last minute “please buy me” items, something bright and hot pink on the shelf to my right captured my attention. I turned to look at what it was and in big hot pink letters it said: “DO WHAT YOU LOVE!” I couldn’t believe my eyes!

I then decided that I really needed to do something about it!
Which brings me to today….

The name of my business: Sangeeta Kiran Designs, is my name Sangeeta which means “musical” and Kiran which means “ray of light”.
Just like my family lights up my life, a lot of my designs feel like rays of light to me, inspiring me to design what you see on my site today.
